25th anniversary of Luminaria Night!
Rain date is December 17, 2022
What is Luminaria Night
On a single evening at dusk over 4,000 homes in Bethlehem and beyond will light luminaries long neighborhood streets and sidewalks. We do this to remember those in need throughout the holiday season. Luminaria Night accompanies other December holidays that all depict the imagery of light in different ways: Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice, and Christmas.
How to buy Luminaria Kits
One Luminaria Kit is a $10 donation and consists of ten white paper bags, ten votive candles, and ten cups of sand. If you saved sand from last year, a kit without sand is still a $10 donation to New Bethany Ministries. Methods of payment include checks, PayPal, Venmo, credit card, and cash.

Thanks to 250 neighborhoods around the Lehigh Valley and beyond, Luminaria Night 2021 was record-breaking! More individuals and families need our services than ever before, and it’s with your support that we are able to continue to serve those in need in our community.
In 2021, $148,607.92 was raised through kit purchases and donations, with a total of 92,424 candles displayed throughout the Valley! We’re grateful for the generosity shown by the community and our sponsors, especially Olympus Corporation of the Americas, Humana, PPL Corporation, PennCap Properties, Quikrete, Lowe’s Home Improvement, and Walmart.
Luminaria Night started 24 years ago in the neighborhood west of Linden Street and north of Johnston Drive. Three neighbors wanted to recreate the tradition of connecting homes with the light of candles in bags at the holiday season. In order to determine interest in participating, they sent out an informational letter to about sixty homes, explaining the nature of the event and the cost of luminaria kits. Through the sale of kits, they raised $300 that first year, all of which was donated to a family in need. In the early years of the event, several different charities benefited from Luminaria Night. Among them was New Bethany Ministries, which provides meals, financial services, and housing to poor, hungry, homeless, and mentally ill individuals and families in the Lehigh Valley. Because the founders of the event were so impressed with the outreach of New Bethany, they decided to affiliate themselves permanently in 2003. Since then, Luminaria Night has added many new neighborhoods, block captains, and regional captains each year. In 2018, we lit 4,200 homes and businesses, raising over $100,000 for New Bethany Ministries. From a desire to connect with neighbors and light up a small neighborhood at the holidays, Luminaria Night has grown to a valley-wide collaboration illuminating many neighborhoods in a beautiful evening of light and giving.
