On December 12th, 2020, New Bethany Ministries held the 23rd annual Luminaria Night.
2020 was a record-breaking year!
Thank you for your participation and support of Luminaria Night 2020. In an extraordinary year that has found more individuals and families in need of New Bethany Ministries services, we are incredibly grateful. Participants from over 250 neighborhoods around the Lehigh Valley made 2020 our most successful Luminaria yet. We enjoyed seeing your social media posts and learning how neighbors (safely) reconnected, sharing in this one-of-a-kind, coordinated event.
Planning has already started for an even bigger impact next year and we are looking forward to 2021. If you have any feedback, are ready to commit as a 2021 block captain or know someone who would like to join the team, please contact Denise O’Connor at email@example.com.
Wishing you a happy holiday season and a safe, healthy New Year!

Luminaria Night started 23 years ago in the neighborhood west of Linden Street and north of Johnston Drive. Three neighbors wanted to recreate the tradition of connecting homes with the light of candles in bags at the holiday season. In order to determine an interest in participating, they sent out an informational letter to about sixty homes, explaining the nature of the event and the cost of luminaria kits. Through the sale of kits, they raised $300 that first year, all of which was donated to a family in need. In the early years of the event, several different charities benefited from Luminaria Night. Among them was New Bethany Ministries,
which provides meals, financial services, and housing to poor, hungry, homeless and mentally ill individuals and families in the Lehigh Valley. Because the founders of the event were so impressed with the outreach of New Bethany, they decided to affiliate themselves permanently in 2003. Since then, Luminaria Night has added many new neighborhoods, block captains, and regional captains each year. In 2018, we lit 4,200 homes and businesses, raising over $100,000 for New Bethany Ministries. From a desire to connect with neighbors and light up a small neighborhood at the holidays, Luminaria Night has grown to a valley-wide collaboration illuminating many neighborhoods in a beautiful evening of light and giving.
In 2019, the event surpassed over $1 Million raised for New Bethany Ministries over the lifetime of the event. We are fortunate to have community members who care about their neighbors facing poverty, homelessness, mental illness and hunger!
Last year, the event raised $112,792 in kit sales and an additional $6,500 were granted by The Cathedral Church of the Nativity, Olympus and PPL to cover the event’s operations. Thank you to our in-kind donors PennCap Properties, Lowes and Quikrete!
